Regional integration in Asia is at a crossroads. The year 2015 was a milestone for the regional integration effort: The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations were concluded in October 2015; the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) was launched in December 2015; and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) aims to conclude the negotiations by the end of 2016. The slowdown of the Chinese economy became evident affecting trade and investment flows as well as regional supply chains. The TPP aims to realize a high standard of liberalization and a comprehensive set of rules covering about 40% of the world GDP and 26% of the world trade. Non-member countries such as South Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Taiwan indicated their interests to join the TPP. It presents challenges for the ASEAN integration as not all the ASEAN countries are part of the TPP. These external conditions in the region are shaped by the competition and cooperation between the US and China. In response, the ASEAN countries must exert themselves in the regional integration effort, propel domestic reforms, and achieve equitable growth across and within countries.
This conference will discuss the implications of the changing regional integration landscape for ASEAN and examine policies necessary to keep each economy and the whole region viable and to achieve inclusive growth. The relevant questions and topics for the conference include:
- How do the changing trends in the world economy affect trade and investment in the ASEAN countries?
- What are the economic impacts of the TPP on the ASEAN countries?
- The TPP and domestic reforms in the ASEAN countries.
- How can the ASEAN countries enhance the productivity and competitiveness of industries?
- What role does the AEC and the RCEP play for the ASEAN countries?
- What are the necessary policies to deal with the ramification of globalization in each country?
- How can the ASEAN countries benefit from infrastructure development?
- How will the rise of the middle class in the ASEAN countries change their growth trajectories?
