On 26-28 March, 2017, the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, HCM City University of Social Sciences and Humanities, attended the opening ceremony to launch a project on “strengthening climate change REsearch And innovation CapaciTies in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam – REACT” at the University of Alicante, Spain. During the meeting, the project’s members had discussions and reached agreements on the project-related issues.

The REACT Project, which lasts 3 years (2017 – 2019), is funded by the Erasmus+ Program of the European Commission, with the participation of 11 member schools under the main coordination of the University of Alicante, Spain. The project’s members consist of universities in Europe (University of Freiburg – Germany, University of Genoa – Italy, Euro-Mediterranean Institute of Risk Science – France) and other partners in Cambodia (Royal University of Agriculture, Heng Samrin Tbong Khmum University), in Laos (Souphanouvong University, National University of Laos and National Economic Research Institute) and in Vietnam (HCM City University of Social Sciences and Humanities (HCMC USSH), Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry). From HCMC USSH side, attending the meeting were Dr. Tran Dinh Lam - Director of Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, Associate Professor Nguyen Thi Hong Xoan - Dean of Sociology Department.

This is one of the 33 international projects which are being implemented by the University of Alicante, Spain. Dr. Roberto Escare, Director of the Office of International Project Management, highlighted the importance of scientific research on climate change, especially in three countries Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The project mainly aims at enhancing research and management capacities at higher education institutions in three Southeast Asian nations and strengthening cooperation among the countries through research on climate change and other multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary studies related to this subject.

Dr. Roberto Escarré gives an opening speech to launch the project.

Additionally, the project has built up several climate change research units attached to the partner universities in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, which helps create a network of scholars and researchers interested in climate change, so they can learn from each other, improve the quality of their research results and propose timely measures to cope with this phenomenon not only at national levels but regional levels as well.

Participation in the project offers the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies – HCMC USSH an opportunity to work with European universities, so it can enhance domestic and international research and management capacities. Besides, the Faculty of Geography and the Faculty of Sociology at HCMC USSH will also directly get involved in this project.

In October 2017, the project’s next meeting is scheduled to take place at the Souphanouvong University in Luang Prabang – Laos.

Representatives of universities from Europe, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
