SEMINAR: IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON LIVELIHOOD AND AGRICULTURE LAND USE IN HAU GIANG: NEW CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

On 28 October 2022, the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, USSH HCMVNU and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hau Giang province hosted a seminar “Impacts of climate change on livelihood and agriculture land use in Hau Giang: New challenges and solutions”. The seminar was attended by Dr Tran Dinh Lam - Principal Investigator, Mr Dang Ngoc Giao - Deputy Director of DARV, Mr Le Thanh Tien - Deputy Director of the Central Bank - Hau Giang Branch, Assoc.Prof.Dr Le Anh Tuan - Faculty of Environment and Natural resources, Can Tho University, Pham Thanh Thoi M.A - Deputy Director of CVSEAS - Co-Principal Investigator, Nguyen Hong Truc, M.A - Co-Principal Investigator and representatives from other departments and offices of the province.

Current situation of agriculture land use, some problems and challenges farmers are facing were the topics discussed at the seminar. In his presentation “Water congestion and eutrophication in Hau Giang”, Assoc.Prof. Dr Le Anh Tuan explained the reasons for the problems which affect agriculture production of local farmers.

The second presentation on "The development of aquaculture models, impacts of climate change and locals’ livelihoods in Hau Giang province" was delivered by Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Lam, Sub-Department of Livestock-Animal production-Fishery of Hau Giang province. The locality has now expanded a dozen of aquaculture models such as extensive fish farming, proactive in fish seed production, commercial farming using commercial fish feed and rice-shrimp model. However, there are still challenges such as the lack of connection between food manufacturing companies and farming households, difficulties in applying VietGap and GlobalGap standards because of high costs, labor workforce’s shortage, and technical skills,...
CVSEAS’s researchers presented two reports on new challenges on the livelihoods of farmers growing pineapple and shrimp-rice farming in the context of climate change and irrigation system projects. The research team presented some findings on the effects of new factors on people's livelihoods such as climate change, construction projects, low-quality seedlings, and treatments for trees.

The discussion session received a lot of practical responses and feedback from representatives of the provincial departments on the presentations of CVSEAS’s research team as well as the speakers’ keynotes. The support from the locality as well as all attendees are highly appreciated. The valuable information and sharings in the seminar will be of great benefit to complete the research and provide the most practical solutions for local farmers to overcome and adapt to the impacts of climate change on agricultural land use.
