From June to August 2022, Phong Hong, a graduate student majoring in Public Health, University of Michigan joined the Vietnamese language program with CVSEAS . He is a fellow of the 2022 Summer FLAS. After two and a half months, Phong completed 140 hours of Intermediate Vietnamese level and got accepted to the Advanced Vietnamese course at Michigan University.
Let’s see Phong’s sharings after finishing the course:
- Why do you want to study Vietnamese?
I want to come back to live and work in Vietnam. Also, I want to learn about my family’s culture and traditions.
- How did you know about the program?
In early 2022, I knew the Summer 2022 FLAS was offering an opportunity for several language courses. Then I applied for a scholarship to learn Vietnamese. To my understanding, FLAS offers two types of Vietnamese language programs, one is based in the US and the other is in Vietnam. I wanted to go to Vietnam so I chose a course offered by a university in HCMC.
- What do you find special about the course?
In this course, I learnt many aspects of Vietnamese culture. In addition to studying with textbooks, I also studied through reading news, listening to Vietnamese music and podcasts.
- What do you think about your Vietnamese proficiency upon course completion?
After two and a half months, I think my Vietnamese has significantly improved. I read and write Vietnamese faster than before. I think I am getting very close to my goal.
