Last summer, from June 19th to July 21st 2017, Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies welcomed Nguyen Hong Anh - a recipient of FLAS fellowships funded by the US government. The fellowships are granted for students from the US to attend intermediate or advanced Vietnamese language study at Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.
Hong Anh is a second-year student majoring in Medicine, University of California, Berkeley. She aims to improve her Vietnamese proficiency to help the Vietnamese community in the States as well as to communicate better in her medical visits to Vietnam.
She completed 90 periods (1 period=1 hour) of a 6-week course at CVSEAS. Anh also had a chance to visit Mekong delta and Vung Tau as a part of the program.
Hong Anh’s sharing about the program:
"I think this program is ideal for people who want to study Vietnamese and engage in Vietnamese culture at the same time. I could ask my Vietnamese teacher anything and he will be happy to explain it to me. In addition, the Center’s staff are very helpful and willing to help me. When I went to Vung Tau and Ben Tre, everyone was friendly and cheerful. They not only make friends with me but also introduce me to others. That gave me a chance to practice and improve my Vietnamese. If you want to study Vietnamese, especially with hospitable native speakers, this course is definitely for you."
Anh received her certificate after completing Summer 2017 Research Tour.
