Apart from conducting the teaching program, the Thai Studies Center is also active in research. A list of publications of the Center can be found at this site. The Center also organizes talks, meetings and, seminars aimed at providing in depth and up-to-date knowledge on Thai society.
PhD Program in Thai Studies
Following the continued success of the Master of Arts in Thai Studies program since 1991, the Department of Thai, Chulalongkorn University, in cooperation with the Thai Studies Center, is offering the PhD Program in Thai studies. The degree provides students the opportunity to develop an in-depth knowledge of a discipline and thematic subject in Thai Studies under the supervision of recognized experts in the field and to become familiar with current research techniques and methodologies.
The degree consists of five years of supervised doctoral research leading to a dissertation and an oral examination. Topics for research degrees can be in any of the disciplines and fields related to Thai Studies offered at Chulalongkorn University.
Duration
Five years maximum
Entry Requirements
Candidates should possess a Master’s degree in any discipline. As the medium of instruction is English, applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English (TOEFL or CU Tep > 550, IELTS > 6.0).
Applicants are also required to submit a brief research proposal. This should include a preliminary title for the research project, identify the main area of research, comment critically on the existing literature and indicate likely sources for the research.
Admission
Students can join the program in either the first or second semester of the year. Application forms may be obtained from the Thai and Southeast Asian Studies Center, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok 10330, Thailand. The deadline for applications is the end of May for the first semester and the end of September for the second semester. It is important to apply well before the start of the semester in which you want to enroll to allow us time to process your application.
Graduation Requisites
Students are required to successfully complete a dissertation equivalent of 48 credits and an oral examination. The dissertation must be an original piece of work and make a distinct contribution to knowledge of the subject.
MA Program in Thai Studies
The Master’s Degree Program in Thai Studies was first offered in 1991. The program provides integrated knowledge for understanding Thai society and culture and the development of the Thai nation. Participants have the opportunity to study and analyze a considerable body of knowledge under the supervision of recognized experts in the field. They can come to appreciate what it is to be Thai in the context of Thailand’s rapidly changing economy, society, and cultural life. As the twenty-first century unfolds, a revaluation of Thai values and Thai worldview - indeed, “Thainess” in all its various aspects – is explored and investigated.
The program should be of great value to those who have to deal regularly with Thai government agencies, companies and individuals, and to those who would like an integrated knowledge of all aspects of Thai culture.
Originally the MA program was designed to have 48 credits (36 credits of which are for course work, and 12 of which are for thesis work) in order to graduate. In the revised program, students will be able to graduate within 3 semesters as graduation requires only 36 credits (24 credits for course work, and 12 for thesis work).
Requisites for Graduation
Students are required to successfully complete:
- A minimum of 24 credits of course work, including at least 9 credit hours of required courses and at least 15 credit hours of electives.
- A thesis equivalent to 12 credit hours, together with an oral examination on that thesis.
