RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INDIA AND SOUTHEAST ASIA – A STRATEGIC COMMITMENT OR REGIONAL INTEGRATION

, 15/07/2009 11:07

On June 15 and 16, 2009, Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies attended the international conference "Relationship between India and Southeast Asia – a strategic commitment or regional integration” which was co-organized by USSH-HCMC and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies (MAKAIAS, Kolkata, India).

The conference attracted a lot of scientists from many countries in the world, especially approximately 30 speeches selected to present at the conference and to be published later.

India’s engagement with Southeast Asia has grown manifold following the pronouncement of its “Look East” Policy in 1992. Economic impulses have been the main drivers of India’s engagement with the region. Cross-border investment flows between India and Southeast Asian economies has also increased rapidly. In the wake of global financial crisis, India and Southeast Asia are stuck to each other more vigorously in order to overcome these temporary difficulties.

Indian Consul General and professor J.K.Ray (Director of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies) presented the cooperation relation between India and Asian countries and wished to promote the long-term cooperation between the two sides.

Dr. Trần Đình Lâm (Director of CVSEAS), participated and contributed to the conference a speech “Vietnam: liberlizing economy towards global integration”. For the past twenty years, Vietnam’s reform has brought about amazing results: the role of the private sector is highly appreciated and new ideas welcomed and encouraged. Vietnam and India share similarities in economic reform: the breakthrough reforms including privatization, openness to international trade, avoiding at all costs the stumbling blocks which should have not existed, focusing on the quality of growth and implementing inflation-controlling measures.

In the context of the global crisis, the conference made some considerable contribution to supporting India and Southeast Asian countries to stick to each other in order to overcome the difficulties and shoulder by shoulder develop sustainably.
