MEETING WITH CONSUL GENERAL OF THE PEOPLE's DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF LAOS

On April 10, 2009, Dr. Trần Đình Lâm (Director of CVSEAS) met with Consul General of Laos in Hồ Chí Minh City on the occasion of Bun Pimai, the traditional New Year of the Laotians.

Year 2008 was marked with good development in the relationship and all-side cooperation between Laos and Vietnam. The cooperation in economy, culture and technology between the two countries has achieved a lot of positive results. Especially, the relationship in commerce and investment has gained considerable progress. Bilateral export turnover in 2008 reached USD 450 million, increasing 44% in comparison to 2007. The operation of the investment of Vietnamese enterprises becomes more and more sustainable. By November 2008 Laotian government had granted licenses to 157 projects invested by Vietnam with the implementing capital of USD 811 million. In particular, also in 2008, Vietnam became the leading country among nearly 40 ones investing in Laos, including projects with registered capital of over USD 1 billion.

Talking to the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, the Lao Consul General agreed to coordinate with the Lao Language Opening Center as well as to support the establishment of the Lao Research Department for the most recent project of CVSEAS.
