REPLICATION SEMINAR 2 – LABOUR MARKET ANALYSIS: WORK & EMPLOYABILITY (MORNING SESSION)

, 23/11/2018 15:11

On November 16th, Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies and Center of Career Orientation and Human Resources Development co-hosted the replication seminar 2 on “Labour Market Analysis: Work & Employability”.

This replication seminar is part of the V2WORK project and divided into two sessions: morning session is for internal staff members in University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City; and afternoon session for external staff members from other universities. Host of the morning session was Dr. Truong Thi Thu Hang, Vice Dean of Faculty of Anthropology.

The seminar attracted the participations of Dr. Tran Dinh Lam – Director of Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, Head of Department of Student Affairs and Career Orientation and Human Resources Development; Dr. Le Hoang Dung – Dean of Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature and together with deans and vice deans of other faculties.

Dr. Truong Thi Thu Hang presented an overview of Vietnam labour market with the following central topics: demographics, labour force and work, education and employability; unemployment and under-age labour, labour policies and the relationships between universities and labour market.

Some concerns of the Vietnam labour market included higher male unemployment rate than female’s (10 percent higher in 2016), higher chances of unemployment for those received higher education, 1.22 million of unemployment during the working age (15 years above), lack of a database system on work and resources for management.

Ms. Hang suggested some ideas on developing the Career Centre. Specifically, she stated that the centre needs to have some short courses on soft skills in addition with more career days or workshops to introduce students with useful information.

During the discussion, Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Loan addressed the difficulties in organizing such events since faculties usually have overlapping schedules which was the reason why there weren’t many attendants even though the survey said otherwise. She also hoped faculties would cooperate to organize such events. Dr. Le Hoang Dung agreed with Dr. Loan on the mentioned difficulties but he said that career orientation was the joint responsibility of the whole school, not only the faculty or the Career Centre.
