, 21/12/2009 10:12On the afternoon of November 9th, 2009, Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies (CVSEAS) held a talk on “The past, present and future of culture in weave and dye in japan mê kông - What is the link of traditional development?” funded by Japan Foundation. Attending the talk were Mr YOSHIMOTO Shinobu - professor of Department for National Culture Studies, Japanese National Ethnological Museum, Mr Takeji Yoshikawa (director of Japan Foundation in Vietnam), Ms Nguyen Thanh Van (program officer), Dr. TRan Dinh Lam (director of CVSEAS), Prof. Dr. Thanh Phan (vice-director of CVSEAS), Prof. Dr. Phan Thi Yen Tuyet (Faculty of Vietnamese Studies), Ms Nguyen Thi Bi (director of COBI Private Enterprise of Production - Trade - Service), experts, researchers and students.
During the talk, Prof. YOSHIMOTO Shinobu introduced the culture of weave and dye in Japan and Southeast Asia in the Mekong delta. Besides the culture of weave and dye in Japan, Prof. YOSHIMOTO presented the succession of traditional culture of weave and dye in Southeast Asian countries today, including the exchange on a large scale for a long time, which has formed a lot of cultural features of weave and dye, and this culture has been inherited so far. In this era, while the tendency of mass production has dominated the world, the traditional arts have also been affected by the wave of the globalization. In this practical context, how can the producers and the consumers inherit the traditional weave and dye as a branch in need of "preserving and fostering" and maintain and develop the system of small production?
The above question raised in the talk created an exciting and interesting discussion based on diversified viewpoints on the directions of preserving and developing the traditional weave and dye of the Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam. Especially, the link between the two cultures of Japan and Southeast Asia through the culture of weave and dye is inevitable in the development of the feature of the weave and dye culture.
With the Japanese experiences and the economic development of today's world globalization, Vietnam and Japan are getting closer to each other. The geographical distance has gradually been reduced when the cultural exchange has been enlarged. Strengthening the understanding cultures between the two nations is of great significance. This talk made some contribution to reducing the distance between Vietnam and Japan. Especially, the experts, researchers and students could get a lot of useful knowledge in weave and dye in Japan and Asia.
The image of a Japanese Kimono woven and dyed skilfully were left in everybody's mind as a link between Japan and Asia.
