Mr. Toshiki Ando – Director of Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam
In his speech at the exhibition’s opening ceremony, Mr. Ando, Director of the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, said that manga has become famous worldwide, and it is also very popular among young Vietnamese people. Organized in Vietnam, the exhibition will help the public get a better understanding of the origin of manga. He hopes to receive positive feedback on the event from the Vietnamese audience.
The “Manga Hokusai Manga: Approaching the Master’s Compendium from the Perspective of Contemporary Comics” exhibition is divided into four sections. First, some of Hokusai’s works of art are introduced. The second part shows works with the central character named Hokusai. The next section exhibits other contemporary manga works based on the ukiyo-e genre of art (which reflects Japan’s social reality) during the Edo period, helping art lovers realize that contemporary manga comics were influenced by this period’s drawing techniques such as drawing lines or opening conversations. The last part of the exhibition provides tutorials on comic drawing, from which similarities between Hokusai’s manga and today’s instructions on contemporary comic drawing in Japan are indicated.
