GRADUATE PROGRAM IN THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII - MANOA
We, the University of Hawaiii – Mānoa (UH- Mānoa), are soliciting applications for entry into our 2016 graduate program. We encourage students to begin applying now, as the application deadline for funding via the East-West Center is November 1st (see below).
The Department of Economics offers competitive M.A. and Ph.D. programs in both theoretical and applied fields. Our areas of specialization include international, development, environmental, and natural resource economics, and other fields might be personalized depending on student interests.
There are many reasons why prospective students should apply to UH-Mānoa.
Here are some of them:
1) Three rankings of economics departments placed UH-Mānoa in the top 13-20 percent of economics departments nationally and globally in 2014 (See:http://www.economics.hawaii.edu/rankings.html). In addition, with the recent hiring of four talented assistant professors and two productive senior faculty, our department continues to gain strength.
2) The placement of our students in recent years has been fantastic. Graduates typically accept jobs at universities around the world, federal and state agencies, institutions such as The World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Asian Development Bank, and in the private banking and consulting sectors.
3) Diversity. Our group of students comes from over 20 countries across Asia, Oceania, the Americas, Africa, and Europe.
4) Our student to faculty ratio is low and allows for a close interaction between faculty and students. Our students benefit from presenting their research and receiving constructive feedback in three weekly brown-bag workshops.
5) Our weekly seminar series features rising young stars and globally-recognized scholars in economics.
6) Our graduate students enjoy both the academic and non-academic aspects of their life here. Located on the island of O’ahu, the city of Honolulu boasts an urban atmosphere set within the beauty of a tropical island.
More information about the graduate program can be found in the attached brochure and the graduate website: http://www.economics.hawaii.edu/grad/
In order to maximize the chances of funding, students are encouraged to submit their application for scholarships administered by the East-West Center (EWC) and request Independent consideration by the Economics Department by November 1, 2015 (note, test scores and reference letters can be submitted at a later date): http://www.eastwestcenter.org/education/student-programs
The Economics Department also awards a limited number of Graduate Teaching Assistantships on a competitive basis. The application deadline for admission to the graduate program and assistantship in the Economics Department is January 15, 2015.
Please do not hesitate to contact me, Ruben Juarez, Graduate Chair (rubenj@hawaii.edu) if you have any questions about our graduate program.
