3RD TRAINING WORKSHOP AND 2ND NATIONAL WORKSHOP OF ENHANCE PROJECT HELD AT AN GIANG UNIVERSITY

, 07/06/2017 09:06

On 16, 17 and 18 May, 2017, partners of the ENHANCE Project attended workshops organized at the An Giang University, Long Xuyen City, An Giang Province. Among the attendees were representatives of the HCM City University of Social Sciences and Humanities USSH), namely Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan, USSH’s Deputy President and Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, Director of the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies.

The event witnessed the participation of the ENHANCE Project’s partners: University of Alicante (Spain), Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (Slovakia), Thai Nguyen University, University of Social Sciences and Humanities – VNU Hanoi, Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Social Sciences and Humanities – VNU Ho Chi Minh, Can Tho University, and An Giang University.

The third training workshop “Formalized Procedures: Intellectual property, contractual framework, internal approval process” and the second national workshop “Strategies for Commercialization of Research Products” were successfully hosted by the An Giang University. Speakers from the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (Slovakia) made useful presentations on supportive programs for scientific research activities, especially on how to prepare documents of intellectual property for research products, the process of granting permission for research proposals as well as introducing commercialization models of research products from European universities.

Vietnamese university partners also shared their success stories in commercializing research products and have cooperation with businesses in scientific studies. An Giang University, the host of this time’s event, presented its research products, i.e. floating rice and wine made from this type of rice, which are considered typical products of the school and the idea had long been planned and fostered. An Giang University had tried to complete its products right before the ENHANCE Project’s workshops took place in order to put emphasis on the role of this project in spreading the importance of Vietnamese higher education institutions in scientific research.

Both state-owned and private enterprises also participated in the workshops and gave presentations on cooperation with Vietnamese universities, especially in terms of conducting studies and commercializing research products. Invited to the workshops by the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, DongA Co., Ltd. shared their story about how to win back the brand “Ben Tre Coconut Candy” in China in 1998. That is a fine example of success stories given the context that many owners of Vietnamese brands lose their intellectual property rights as this issue is still new to them. DongA Co., Ltd.’s success story was also discussed by the Waseda University (Japan) in the conference proceedings titled “Intellectual Property Rights in Developing Countries” published by Vietnam National University – HCM City in 2012.

This time’s event was the third workshop of the ENHANCE Project in Vietnam. It was regarded as the largest-scale since the project kicked off due to its widespread impact on Vietnamese universities, especially An Giang University. Dr. Vo Van Thang, President of An Giang University, stated that ENHANCE Project not only connects Vietnam’s higher education institutions in scientific research and collaboration but also provides a lesson from European counterparts in enhancing the capacity of staff working in scientific research and management, contributing to promoting the sustainable development of research communities in Vietnam.
