HCM-USSH ATTENDED INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE TOURIST PROJECT IN HANOI

The International Scientific Conference “Sustainable Tourism Development: Experiences for Southeast Asia Countries ” taking place at VNU USSH on Dec 3rd and 4th 2019, is part of the TOURIST Project funded by the European Union through the Erasmus + Program. The delegation from Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities, including 03 members, actively engaged in the Conference.
More than 60 scholars, researchers and representatives of management agencies, local and foreign training institutions participated in the conference. Delegation from VNUHCM USSH included Dr Tran Dinh Lam - Director of the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, leader of the delegation; Dr Nguyen Van Hoang - Lecturer of Faculty of Tourism and Nguyen Hong Truc M.S.- Sustainable Research and Urban Planning Specialist.
During two days of the conference, scholars and researchers analyzed the positive aspects that tourism has contributed to the economy, job market and international cultural exchanges. In addition, downsides and challenges of Vietnam tourism as well as Southeast Asia tourism, especially sustainable development, were addressed at the forums. Through the discussion, participants hoped to form a network that shares knowledge and provides practical solutions to apply in every member country.

Regarding activities conducted by VNUHCM USSH, all members of the delegation had scientific reports published on the conference’s journal. Particularly, Dr Hoang presented his research on sustainable development in Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An tourist destination. Based on his assessments of the current situation of tourism exploitation in Cu Lao Cham and the sustainable development goals of the tourism industry, he suggested applying management models from developed countries to reform the tourism destination management model in Vietnam. The report received many positive responses from other participants.

The 1st International Scientific Conference held in Hanoi is the main activity of the 5th work package of TOURIST* project, aiming to promote and create a sustainable tourism development network for Vietnam and Thailand. . The 2nd International Conference will be held in Thailand in 2020.
(*) TOURIST, "Development of Sustainable Tourism and Innovative Financial Management Strategies to increase the positive impact of local tourism in Thailand and Vietnam", is a three-year project spanning from 2017 to 2020. The project is funded by the EU’s Erasmus+ and overseen by FH Joanneum (Austria). Other associates include Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hue University, and Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
