Project TOURIST, funded by the Erasmus+ Foundation of the European Union, has its objectives in improving Vietnam’s capacity for sustainable tourism development. The initiation of the project is in answer to the ongoing trend in tour operators and tourist destinations in Vietnam where goals of sustainable development and preservation of local traditional cultural values are being given more priority. As testaments to that statement, at the exchange, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam gave many examples of which include: the community tourism model Con Chim (Tra Vinh Province) and Go Co Heritage Village Park (Quang Ngai Province) by Sa Huynh Travel Company. A common thread among these examples lied in their ability to unite and establish business – local community cooperation. The Lotus Village model (Long An Province) by Phuc Khang Corporation is another example whose philosophy is rooted in the preservation of the environment and cultural values by means of architecture.

The session was an important opportunity to inform the students of Thu Dau Mot University of the changing future of tourism in Vietnam. The exchange also served as an inspirer of ideas with potential for new and innovative approaches to developing sustainable tourism in Vietnam. Furthermore, the exchange helped to build a basis for future cooperation between universities of Vietnam and their counterparts in Europe.
