MEETING WITH HUE SUB-INSTITUTE – VIETNAM NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF CULTURE AND ARTS STUDIES TO DISCUSS PROJECT TOURIST

, 11/08/2020 11:08

On July 27th, 2020, as a part of the TOURIST project, CVSEAS’s research team paid a visit to Dr. Tran Dinh Hang – Director of Hue Sub-Institute, Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies, in order to study community based tourism in central Vietnam. Dr. Le Anh Tuan – Vice Director of the Sub-Institute and other staff also joined the meeting.

In the meeting, Dr. Tran Dinh Hang introduced the activities of Hue Sub-Institute (VICAS Hue) and the potential of community based development in Hue. According to Mr Hang, several places in some areas in Hue already applied community based tourism but failed to reach a high rate of sustainability due to subjective causes and limitations of the methods of cooperation.

In addition, a distinctive characteristic of the locals – cautiousness is also the reason leading to numerous failures of community based tourism models. Mr. Pham Thanh Thoi (M.A), a representative from CVSEAS shared about the experience of developing four-element models (locals, businesses, scientists and the government). The model has been successfully conducted in Hoi An, Sa Huynh and was suggested to Hue Sub-Institute for consideration.

CVSEAS giving an introduction about TOURIST’s activities to VICAS Hue

In the field trip exploring fishing villages on Tam Giang lagoon before (located at Phong Dien and Quang Dien District, Hue), CVSEAS was informed about the strengths of lagoon areas in terms of tourism and their specialties. Mr Tran Dinh Hang acted as a tour guide, helping the CVSEAS team understand more about the destination through interesting stories of the history and culture of traditional villages clustered around the lagoon in Sia District and other neighboring districts. The village’s uniqueness was expected to attract tourists’ attention.

At the end of the visit, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam - Director of CVSEAS, put a strong emphasis on the potential of research collaborations between Hue Sub-Institute and CVSEAS. With the assistance of local fishing villagers, businesses and local government of Tam Giang lagoon, Dr. Lam hoped that researchers of the Sub-Institute and those from CVSEAS would directly participate in designing community based tourism models with the aim of developing sustainable tourism as well as influencing this type of tourism to local people./.
