WORKSHOP: EXPLOITATION AND COMMERCIALIZATION: RESEARCH EVALUATION, SPIN-OFF CREATION
, 02/07/2018 11:07On June 29th, 2018, “Exploitation and Commercialization: Research Evaluation, Spin-off Creation” workshop was held with a guest speaker Tran Van Lieng, Chairman/President of Vinacacao Corporation.
The workshop was held at University of Social Sciences and Humanities by Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, with the coordination of Alicante University in Spain and funded by Erasmus+. This event is a part of ENHANCE – Strengthening National Research and Innovation Capacities in Vietnam project that aims to improve Vietnam’s higher education system as well as R&I (Research and Innovation) capabilities. There are a total of six modules corresponding to six separated workshops, each aiming at improving, strengthening and developing a certain skill necessary for lecturers. Two of these six workshops were held at University of Social Sciences and Humanities on 28th and 29th of June, and the other four were held at Thu Dau Mot University and Tra Vinh University.
The workshop attracted many lecturers, researchers, students as well as staff from different education institutions, research centers and other units. The diversity in areas of study, and background of participants contributed significantly to the excitement of the workshop, especially to the Q&A session at the end of the workshop.
President of Vinacacao, Mr. Tran Van Lieng not only analyzed and discussed the current status of spin-off companies (*) in Vietnam, but also shared his experience in starting his own business. Besides, he introduced the SWOT (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis to encourage academics, young researchers and those interested to start their own spin-off companies.

Having attended the workshop, participants had a chance to enrich their knowledge on key topics for a better R&I management and implementation and to understand the models and structure of Research Evaluation in EU countries; the advantages and disadvantages of spin-off creation in academic and research sphere; the missions and services of spin-off bodies in R&I structure; several successful spin-off case studies; strategies for business engagement.
The second part of the workshop was Q&A, during which participants were encouraged to share their opinions and thoughts on the above-mentioned topics. Many interesting questions from the audience were discussed and clarified during this session.

Dr. Loan, a lecturer at Faculty of Tourism at University of Social Sciences and Humanities, for instance, raised the issue of “wastefulness” in education despite a considerable investment of both institutions and businesses. In particular, students still need to receive certain training after graduation when recruited by companies, especially newly-graduated ones. Mr. Lieng also shared the same concern over the issue but he did not consider it a real problem.
“Businesses do not really need to provide students with brand new knowledge, only soft skills and working attitude need to be changed and improved,” – said Vinacacao’s president. Having recruited many newly-graduates, the spokesperson stated that it is important for universities to make students realize that there are things they have to do despite their liking; and that willingness to get the job done is a crucial element to success.

Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, Director of Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian studies, expressed his appreciation towards the honored guest speaker – President/Chairman of Vinacacao Corporation Tran Vang Lieng, as well as all the participants of the workshop. He ended the workshop by emphasizing the importance of the cooperation between business and education institutions in order to provide practical knowledge for students and researchers.
