Since 1997, Dr. Bui holds the distinguished professorship of global business endowed by the Matson Navigation Company at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He earned a doctorate in managerial economics from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland and a Ph.D. in information systems/economics from the Stern School of Business, New York University. Prior to joining the University of Hawaii, Prof. Bui was on the faculty at the United States Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, New York University, the Universities of Fribourg and Lausanne, Switzerland, the University of Quebec, Montreal, Canada, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Technical University of Aachen, Germany. He holds honorary professorship at Hue University, Vietnam and at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, China. |
Prof. Bui has published 14 books and over 160 papers. His current research interests focus on effective use of IT in large organizations, information literacy, electronic commerce, sustainable development, and in collaborative technology, including group decision and negotiation support systems and crisis management. In 1993, a research journal (DSS) nominated him as “one of the most influential researchers in the field of decision support systems” based on citation. He is on the editorial board of a number of prestigious academic journals related to information technology in business and society. He has chaired 13 major international conferences, and is a regular program committee member of international meetings and workshops. Among other professional activities, he is also an active member of the International Public Management Network whose interest is on reinventing government.
As the Director of the Pacific Research Institute on Information Systems Management (PRIISM), Bui is chairing the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) – in its 49th years, HICSS is widely considered as the top research conference in the MIS discipline. Bui is a regular speaker worldwide, promoting the use of information technology to support innovation and entrepreneurship. He has been a regular consultant and advisor to both governmental and private organizations on a number of public policies to include national and regional planning and business process re-engineering. As the head of the UH Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Study Center, Bui organizes APEC youth camp taking American High School students to meet with their APEC counterparts, and engages in various APEC Working Groups. In collaboration with the government of Thailand, Bui headed a joint project funded by APEC to promote e-commerce in East Asia with a publication titled “E-commerce Readiness in East Asia”, a video on e-commerce practice for SMEs, and a number of e-commerce workshops in East-Asia. He was the leader of a five-year leadership program funded by the Provincial Government of Guangdong, China to train senior government officials as part of China’s preparation to enter WTO (1999-2004). Since 2012, Bui is actively participating in APEC work on climate change adaptation and “smart” economic development (Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam), and on cross-border entry facilitation during times of crisis. In 2013, he released a significant APEC working, funded by USAID to deal with emergency response travel facilitation.
In Vietnam, Bui was one of the first Americans to promote U.S. involvement in education and training in the country. He lead a national and privately funded project to promote information literacy in Vietnam via English language training, library and information sciences works. Bui is the director of the University of Hawaii Executive MBA in Vietnam founded in 2001, the only program that is AACSB accredited and recognized as the best graduate business education in the country. He was awarded the National Medal from the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training for his work in the country, He served as a personal advisor to the Vietnam’s minister of Education and Training, and is a regular media contributor for business magazines and television in Vietnam and in Hawaii, and a mentor to Vietnamese business executives through the Shidler entrepreneurship initiative.
In Hawaii, Bui is an active citizen involving in various community associations in the Aloha State. He appears regularly on local televisions, radios and newspapers to promote international economic development. He is the author of award-winning reports on the “E-commerce Trends in Hawaii – 2000”, and “Hawaii 2020”. He is the recipient of the 2003 U.S. Department of Commerce SBA Small Business Research Advocate Award for the State of Hawaii and the Western region of the U.S. |
