40TH ANNIVERSARY OF VIETNAM – JAPAN DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS
, 01/03/2013 15:03Dr. Tran Dinh Lam just attended the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam – Japan diplomatic relations, the introduction of a traditional wine of Japan named sake and the kicking off the Vietnam – Japan Friendship Year which took place at Legend Hotel, HCMC on February 27, 2013.
The anniversary witnessed the participation of Consul General of Japan Harumitsu Hida, Vice Chairman of HCMC People’s Committee Le Manh Ha, Chairman of the Japanese Business Association in HCMC Mori Mitsuhiro, presidents of some universities in HCMC and representatives of Vietnamese and Japanese businesses, etc.
In his speech at the anniversary, Consul General of Japan Harumitsu Hida said that the relationship between Japan and Vietnam continued to flourish, both at state and civil levels, based on the strategic partnership.
“The fact that Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo paid an official visit to Vietnam in his first foreign business trip after his inauguration in January this year proves the close relationship between Japan and Vietnam. At the summit meeting between the two countries, he also declared the opening of the Vietnam – Japan Friendship Year 2013”, said the Consul General.

Vice Chairman of HCMC People’s Committee Le Manh Ha said that Japan was Vietnam’s third biggest partner with the turnover reaching nearly US$25 billion in 2012. In terms of FDI, by the end of last year, it ranked first among the nations and territories investing in Vietnam with 1,800 projects which were operating and had the total registered capital of US$29 billion. Moreover, Japan offered is the largest sum of ODA to Vietnam, accounting for 30% of the total ODA from the international communities. Now the number of people who are studying Japanese in Vietnam has reached over 40,000 and the number of students studying in Japan is the biggest among other ASEAN countries. These form a bridge to the enhancement of mutual understanding and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
“HCMC is one of the regions in Vietnam leading in strengthening the relations with Japan. Nowadays Japan is the 5th biggest investor in HCMC with 555 projects and the total capital reaching US$2.73 billion. It is also the 3rd biggest trade partner and has the most number of tourists travelling to HCMC in compared to other countries and territories”, emphasized Le Manh Ha.
HCMC has signed several agreements to establish the cooperation relationship with many cities in Japan with a lot of exchange programs, technology exchanges and human resource training, etc.
The ceremony also saw the presence of Director of Dewazakura Sake Company, Nakano Masumi; Representative of the Samurai Sake Office, Irie; Shata from Shata Wine Production Company. This is an opportunity for Vietnamese companies trading in wine to have discussion with Japanese manufacturers about the capability to start business with Japanese wine in Vietnam in the future.
