At the beginning of the seminar, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam delivered a presentation on major features of Vietnam’s economy, from the period of a subsidized economy to the economic reform (1986 – 1990) as well as the Vietnam’s economic prospects during about the first 10 years of the 21st century. In addition to economic aspects, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam also mentioned some hot issues related to China which Vietnam and Japan have in common. For example, markets are flooded with cancer-causing products originated from China, or a Beijing-based restaurant in China does not serve the Vietnamese, Japanese and Filipinos, which has been recently reflected by the press.
When Dr. Lam’s presentation finished, the students from Waseda University were divided into 4 small groups to had discussion with ones from USSH. After discussing for over an hour, these groups took turns to present their ideas to help develop the Vietnam’s economy, such as more investment in education needed, promoting cooperation with other countries in the region to exchange technology, and improving the transportation system, etc. Besides, they also made some interesting comparisons of daily life and student life between the Vietnamese and the Japanese, from which it can be seen that we – Vietnamese people – should learn many things from the Japanese.
