ATTENDING RECEPTION ON ANNIVERSARY OF REPUBLIC DAY OF INDIA
, 30/01/2013 14:01Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, Director of the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies just attended an official reception on the 64th anniversary of the Republic Day of India in HCM City on January 28, 2013.
The reception witnessed the participation of His Excellency Abhay Thakur – Consul General of India in HCM City, Vice Chairman of HCMC People’s Committee Le Manh Ha, Deputy Director of the HCM City Department of External Relations Nguyen Tien Hong, Chairman of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations in HCM City Le Hung Quoc together with diplomatic delegates, and Indian community and enterprises in HCM City.
Representatives from Vietnam National University – HCM City (VNU-HCM) included Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Dat – Deputy Director of HCM City National University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Phuc – Head of Department of Foreign Relations from VNU-HCM, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung – President of University of Economics and Law, Prof. Vo Van Sen – President of the HCM City University of Social Sciences and Humanities, representatives of the Faculty of Oriental Studies and lecturers of Indian studies.

Consul General of India in HCM City His Excellency Abhay Thakur gave his speech at the reception.
In his speech at the reception, Consul General of India in HCM City His Excellency Abhay Thakur said that the last year was a memorable one with a series of bilateral exchange programs of India in Vietnam in general and in HCM City in particular. The Secretary of State, Minister of Industry and Commerce, Minister of Agriculture, Premier of Assam and Minister of Tourism had a visit to HCM City last year.
In 2012, a navy ship of India visited Hai Phong, a coast guard one to HCM City and an Indian navy training one to Da Nang. Activities in cultural exchange also took place with excitement, such as the performance of Odissi dance, the band “Shwass”, the photography exhibition Kalpana and the culinary week in HCM City.
The number of ITEC short-term scholarships for Vietnam has doubled, increasing from 75 to 150. Sharing many characteristics in culture also contributes to the development of tourism, with visas for India going up by 15% in 2012.
Investments of India in Vietnam have now reached over US$800 million; bilateral trade has exceeded US$4 billion and aims to reach to US$7 in 2015. India organized more than ten commercial events in HCM City during 2012 and New Delhi welcomed a commercial delegate from HCM City at the India – ASEAN Commerce Conference in 12/2012 as well as representatives of chemical, pharmaceutical and tourism sectors to business events held in India.
His Excellency Consul General of India expressed his sincere thanks to HCM City for its support to Indian enterprises and to social activities of Indian community, hoping that the relationship between the two countries will be strengthened in many fields.
