Dr. Tran Dinh Lam attended the “Sustainable Development in Mekong Delta – Theoretical and Practical Issues” conference taking place at the HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities (HCMC USSH) on January 02, 2014.
Conference participants included Assoc.Prof. Vo Van Sen, President of the HCMC USSH, Prof. Ngo Van Le, together with other professors, doctors, post-graduates and graduates of the university.
Giving the opening speech at the conference, Assoc.Prof. Sen emphasized that the Mekong Delta has great potential and resources for social-economic development. Although the region has gained lots of economic achievements, it is still not comparable with its resources, and that does not guarantee the country’s sustainable development. Mekong Delta is the largest granary, the largest seafood producer, and the most copious fruit supplier, but many problems still persist, such as poor infrastructure, low education and unguaranteed social welfare. The region’s inhabitants have to struggle with the market mechanism to earn their livelihood and strenuously cope with climate change.

Assoc.Prof. Vo Van Sen delivered his opening speech at the conference.
“Sustainable development in the Mekong Delta is not only a long-term strategy but also an urgent target, which needs to be thoroughly grasped through policies and projects at all macro and micro levels”, said Assoc.Prof. Sen.
The conference was divided into two sub-committees with reports on the topic. This is an opportunity for scientists to gain a more comprehensive and detailed understanding of the current situation of sustainable development in the Mekong Delta as well as its causes, and clarify issues of social basis and key factors in the region’s growth so that they can propose solutions to promote rapid and sustainable development for the region in years to come.
