Prof. Dennis Galvan, Vice President in charge of international cooperation at the University of Oregon, appreciated Prof. Tuong Vu’s effort in his cooperation with the University of Hawaii to gather those researching into Vietnam for discussion and exchanges. Prof. Tuong Vu had a presentation leaving deep impression on all the participants with the theme “State Formation on China's Southern Frontier:Vietnam as a Shadow Empire and Hegemon”.
Dr. Dang Van Huan (Portland State University and Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training) focused on the topic of the socialist state in Vietnam and education reforms through “The Legacies of a Socialist State and the Lack of Radical Change in Higher Education Policy on Institutional Autonomy in Vietnam”. He emphasized the importance of exchanges among scholars and students of Vietnam and the U.S. Oregon City is now implementing plenty of cooperative programs and exchanges with Vietnam, creating a favorable opportunity to promote the relations between the two countries.
Dr. Tran Dinh Lam brought to the conference a report titled “Developing culture, economics, and society towards a developed society of Bahnar people”. A number of papers wrote about issues related to Vietnam’s education, focusing on practical internship and the application of theory into reality so students would be able to get employment.
For remarkable issues in the Vietnamese society, Dr. Vu Thanh Tu Anh talked about reform on state-owned enterprises and WTO integration. It is crucial to impose radical measures for reforming state-owned enterprises, helping decrease loss and negative effect on the state budget as well as facilitating equitization to benefit businesses and following market rules of competition.
The model of the Phu My Hung new urban zone in Vietnam mentioned in the presentation by Dr. Erik Harms (Yale University) drew a lot of attraction since it formed an example for the urbanization of civil areas in the future.
