DISSERTATION OF DR. JULIA HA (UNIVERSITY OF INNSBRUCK) GIVEN TO CVSEAS

, 27/05/2013 09:05

Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, Director of the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies (CVSEAS), has just met with Dr. Julia Ha on the occasion of her business trip to the HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH). Taking this opportunity, Dr. Julia Ha has presented CVSEAS with her dissertation titled “Two worlds with one origin”, which compares Vietnamese women living in Vietnam with those living abroad.

This is the research which was offered support by the HCMC USSH in 2005 – 2006. Julia Ha said that she was greatly impressed and deeply grateful for the academic contributions and assistance from the scientists during the period of time she did her study in Vietnam.

Dr. Julia Ha presented her dissertation to CVSEAS.

Her dissertation focuses on comparing Vietnamese women living in Vietnam and those overseas as well as analyzing their characteristics in different countries. Some questions have been raised in her dissertation, for example how women are affected by Western elements after war and how their role in society has changed. In addition, the research also explores the challenges which overseas Vietnamese women have to face to maintain Vietnamese tradition and values as well as their obstacles in the path of emigrating to other cultures.

The study’s results have clearly indicated the gender role, sexual equality, financial independence, family relationships, and contradictions between modern and traditional elements of Vietnamese women in the interaction with the social environment in which they are living.

This research was highly valued by professors from the University of Innsbruck (Austria) where Julia Ha completed her doctoral program.
