The Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies attended the concert “Singing and talking together” by the Japanese band Kaientai at the Ben Thanh Theater on the evening of April 14.

The program was co-organized by the Japanese Business Association and the Consulate General of Japan in HCMC to mark 40 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan. Vietnam is the first overseas country Kaientai band has chosen to have performances. This concert also aims at extending the Japanese’s gratitude towards Vietnamese people for enthusiastically raising funds and organizing a lot of charity activities to help victims of earthquakes and tsunamis. Moreover, the performance has the purpose of encouraging the Japanese living in Vietnam and introducing Japanese culture to Vietnamese people who have been, and will be, concerned with Japan.

Kaientai band consists of 3 members: Takeda Tetyuya, Nakamura Toshio and Chiba Kazuomi. Formed in 1971, this band has created the trend of Japanese live fork music. Takeda’s music reached its peak in the 1980s, winning the recognition of all classes at all years of age in society. After a long period of time of separating, the band got back together in 1994 and flourished through live tours across the country.

The band performed 8 songs, including Pilgrimage Song, Ballad Dedicated to My Mother, Far away, Folk of My Hometown, The Starting Point, Set Fire to the Love Letter, My Words to You, and My Companion for Life. Particularly, the song “My Words to You”is sung by the Japanese on the occasions of commencement or farewell parties; “Ballad Dedicated to My Mother” expresses a son’s love to his mother and “Far Away” reflects the feeling of those living far away from their hometown. The songs of Kaientai band have won people’s heart as immortal love songs.

Takada Tesuya, a member of the band, is a well-known singer and song writer in Japan. Besides folk songs, he also composed the original soundtracks to the cartoon Doraemon in special episodes, etc. Additionally, he is also known for being an actor with many roles, especially his starring one in “Mr. Kinpachi of the Class 3B” which is popular among a lot of Japanese people.
