MEETING PROF. DR. BUI TUNG – CHIEF ARCHITECT IN RESEARCH ON MANAGEMENT, SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY
, 05/03/2015 16:03Dr. Tran Dinh Lam visited the University of Hawaii at Manoa (the US), meeting up with Prof.Dr. Bui Tung at the Information Technology Management Department on November 28, 2014.
At the University, Dr. Bui Tung is recognized as a leading professor in the field of global business by Matson Navigation Company in 1997. The University was provided a fund of $30 million 8 years ago, and now continues receiving $70 million annually for the department’s operation, thanks to which academic and scientific research activities are carried out. To acknowledge Shilder’s great support, the department has changed its name as the University of Hawaii Shilder College of Business.
Prof. Bui Tung has had 11 books published and written over 110 research papers. His current interests are effective management of corporations, e-commerce, sustainable development and cooperative technology, including group decision and negotiation support systems. In 1993, a research journal named him as “one of the most influential researchers in the field of decision support systems”. He won the award for best research papers at the 1996 Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. Two of his papers were nominated as the best by the Journal of Information Systems Education in 1999. Furthermore, has also won the best article award at the Decision Science Institute Conference (2000).
The professor has been invited as a regular visiting lecturer in many emerging economies to help with human resources training. As an American with the Vietnamese origin, he has made the US involved in developing Vietnam’s education and training. He used to work as a consultant for the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training during the period of 1993-1994. He has been recognized as an executive architect in information technology at the Vietnam National University, both in Hanoi and HCMC. The number of applicants at these two universities is increasing, but due to the course’s limited credits, it cannot be expanded. According to the professor, these courses have helped create cooperative opportunities for learners, for at the end of each, they have built up their own prestige.

The professor added that the key element of advancement is human resources that can take advantage of high technology. He hopes that the two national universities in Vietnam will attract more students from Cambodia and Laos to promote exchanges among the three countries for further cooperation and development.
The University of Hawaii has many distinguished professors and it attracts lots of international students. About 80,000 students are studying at the university, in which there are about 17,000 international students out of 20,000 at the major campus.
