Dr. Tran Dinh Lam met and had discussion on research collaboration plans with Dr. Mariam B. Lam from the University of California, Riverside (the U.S.) on the afternoon of July 23, 2013.
Dr. Mariam B. Lam has been a lecturer in comparative literature and Southeast Asian studies at the Department of Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages, University of California, Riverside. She is also the director of Southeast Asian Studies (SEATRiP) at the university. This is the program through which Dr. Lam wants to have collaboration with professors and researchers in Vietnam and other countries in the Southeast Asian region to promote studies on art, languages and cultures of these countries.
Before her visit to the HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Dr. Mariam B. Lam had come to Hanoi to look for research opportunities with scholars interested in SEATRiP. She said that due to the economic depression, most foundations, and even the government, all reduced their financial support for research projects like hers. As a result, Dr. Lam really wishes to find other sources of funding and have cooperation with professors of public universities in order to bring the best results to the program.

Dr. Mariam B. Lam (2nd, L) visited the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies.
Dr. Lam added that her university is building up a digital archive, to which writings and audio files of the program participants will be uploaded. To develop this database, she has had to visit many universities and institutes having studies on Southeast Asia to invite professors to participate in her program. Besides, she was also happy to share that a number of well-known universities agreed to engage in the project, including the Kyoto University (Japan), the Asia Research Institute (National University of Singapore) as well as some other universities in the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam.
Dr. Tran Dinh Lam appreciates this research opportunity offered by Dr. Mariam B. Lam, for it brings Vietnamese professors a precious chance to exchange their knowledge and learn from their counterparts in the U.S. According to Dr. Lam, professors in the U.S. are glad to help Vietnamese scholars with the editing and translating their research papers into English, and then upload them to the project’s digital archive. Therefore, it creates a good opportunity for researches of Vietnam to spread over many countries in the world.
