MEETING WITH MS. TAKEI FROM BANK OF MITSUBISHI AND AN ECO-AGRICULTURE FIELD TRIP IN AN GIANG
, 03/02/2015 09:02Dr. Tran Dinh Lam met up with Ms. Takei, an official from the Bank of Mitsubishi (Japan), and Mr. Shiokawa, Director of Nico Nico Yasai Co. (Dak Lak) on January 09. After the meeting, the group had an eco-agriculture field trip to Tri Ton District, An Giang Province.
A program aimed at preserving the distinctive cultural feature of the floating rice region is being implemented in this province. On the field trip, the group had a chance to meet up with Nguyen Minh Triet, Ecofarm’s Director; Do Minh Tri, Deputy Chairman of Tri Ton District People’s Committee; and Mr. Peter, ICMP’s representative.
Evaluating the model of growing floating rice, Mr. Peter said that Tri Ton is doing a meaningful thing, helping spread the spirit of being in harmony with nature. It is necessary to maintain such as model and unify localities in protecting the eco-environment. It is thanks to growing floating rice that creates a green environment and minimizes the use of pesticide and fertilizers, contributing to improving the life quality of local people.
Ms. Takei was greatly impressed by floating rice without any pesticide and chemical fertilizer. She wished to get more understanding of the real situation in order to provide support for companies in producing eco-agriculture to be consumed in Japan. Tri Ton’s floating rice needs introducing to foreign markets, such as in Europe, Japan and other countries.
Ecofarm’s Director pledged that his company will buy all rice grown by farmers in the region. Floating rice’s price is three times higher than that of ordinary rice, and the former can last for 6 months.
With 40 hectares last year, now Vinh Phuoc District has expanded the area of growing floating rice up to 91 hectares. The model of floating rice will bring high economic benefits for farmers if it is mixed with a seasonal crop. Nguyen Van Van, the hamlet People’s Committee, wished to approach investors and businessmen for more support for farmers. In addition, he requested the district People’s Committee to take some measures for those who bid for over 250 hectares of agricultural land in the locality but have left it uncultivated for the past 5 years. Meanwhile, farmers do not have enough land to expand their growing of floating rice.
