Dr. Tran Dinh Lam just had a small talk with Prof. David Ericson and Dr. Phan Le Ha from the Educational Foundation at the University of Hawaii at Manoa on June 09.
Taking this occasion, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam introduced a book about traditions, culture, and lifestyle of the Bahnar people to Prof. David Ericson. He expressed his deep concern over ethnic minorities that are facing the risk of disappearing as well as their languages. In addition, he mentioned the importance of education and human resources to Vietnam’s economic development as well as other communities. With years of experience in doing studies on mechanism and characteristics of national education systems of the US and Europe, Prof. Ericson hopes that the University of Hawaii will share its experience with educational researchers and managers at the Vietnam National University – HCMC.

Given the lifestyle mainly relied on forests of mountainous peoples, Prof. Ericson worried about their lack of knowledge in deforestation and its negative impacts. The professor said that once forests are destroyed, human lifestyle will be ruined too.
Discussing the situation in the East Sea, Dr. Phan Le Ha thought that this is an opportunity for Vietnam to claim its national sovereignty and develop relations with other countries. He remarked that this is also a chance to unite overseas Vietnamese people all over the world as well as strengthening trust and sharing with each other among Vietnamese residents nationwide.
Dr. Ha also talked about a story of Chinese students in Australia. The question raised to those students is: “Is there any fear when China is rising?” Chinese students thought that, in fact, China is very good at spreading its image of powerful development and expansion. The country’s real difficulties are not disclosed because the Internet connection is strictly controlled. Additionally, he said that China’s act of deploying the oil rig into Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone in the East Sea is not to prove its super power, but it is just a “childish” move.
Prof. Ericson, Dr. Phan Le Ha and Dr. Tran Dinh Lam all agreed that a country’s power lies in its own residents. As a result, Vietnam needs to invest in human development and human resources to enhance its strength.
