MEETING WITH PROF. MASUMI ISHIDA, VICE PRESIDENT OF JOSAI INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY, JAPAN
, 31/05/2013 16:05Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, Director of the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, had a meeting with Prof. Masumi Ishida from Josai International University (JIU), Japan, on the occasion of his business trip to Vietnam at the HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH) on the afternoon of May 30, 2013.
Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, Director of the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, had a meeting with Prof. Masumi Ishida from Josai International University (JIU), Japan, on the occasion of his business trip to Vietnam at the HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH) on the afternoon of May 30, 2013.
The professor said that he has been working for over 20 years at JIU. During the talk, he expressed pride in the university’s development: from a small university with 360 students studying at 3 faculties, JIU now has 5200 students from various countries and 8 undergraduate faculties (including Faculty of Management & Information Sciences, Faculty of International Humanities, Faculty of Media Studies, Faculty of Social Work Studies, Faculty of Tourism, Faculty of Social and Environmental Studies, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Faculty of Nursing) as well as 6 graduate schools (including Graduate School of Humanities, Graduate School of Management & Information Sciences, Graduate School of Social Work Studies, Graduate School of International Administration, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Graduate School of Business Design).

Also according to the professor’s introduction, JIU consists of 4 campuses: Chiba Togane, Tokyo Kioicho, Awa and Makuhari. Among them, the most special is Awa Campus (for the Faculty of Tourism) in Komogawa - a resort town surrounded by ocean and green spaces, and 100% of students at this faculty can have good jobs after their graduation.
Through the talk, Prof. Ishida shared the JIU’s philosophy with us, which is “character building through learning”. Moreover, he was happy to inform of the opening the Prince Takamado Memorial Sports Park (named after the late Prince Takamado, a tireless contributor to international exchange). It is a new state-of-the-art sports facility with a soccer field designed to host professional sporting events and serve as a foundation for international exchange activities. The professor also talked about the newly-established Global Institute for Green Materials.
Prof. Ishida wishes to exchange knowledge with the Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam. He hopes to have opportunities to cooperate with universities in Vietnam in order to help Vietnam produce human resources of high quality to meet the society’s needs. Additionally, he encourages Vietnamese students to study at JIU. More specifically, he has had a discussion with Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Tien Luc, Head of the Department of Japanese Studies (USSH) about admitting students at this faculty into JIU for their higher study.
