According to Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, to solve the issue of stability in the region, especially the defiance of China related to dispute over the East Sea, the Southeast Asian countries need to raise a common voice to keep their own monopoly on the basis of respect to and compliance with United Nations Conventions on the Law of the Sea. Collaboration and avoidance of misunderstanding that may lead to separation and weakening of the Southeast Asian countries play an important role in maintaining peace in the region.
At the meeting, Brett Hansen also talked about the concern of U.S. universities’ professors over studies on ASEAN-related issues. As a result, he wished to organize a forum or an international conference to link U.S. educational institutions with those in ASEAN such as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar. This will offer a chance for professors from many universities to share their experience in training and enhancing human resources with the aim of achieving prosperity in the future.
In addition, Brett Hansen called for investments in economic development from Vietnam to Laos and Cambodia on the basis of mutual benefits. While having cooperation, the involved countries must comply with international conventions and ensure employment for laborers in order to bring long-term benefits to the people of each country.
