PROF. NGO BAO CHAU'S TALK: COMMON POINT BETWEEN ART AND SCIENCE

, 17/09/2013 14:09

The Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies participated in the talk by Prof. Ngo Bao Chau with the theme “The common point between art and science” at the HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities (HCMC USSH) on August 21. It was within the frame of the ASEAN – Canada Forum 2013.

The talk saw the presence of Assoc.Prof.Dr. Vo Van Sen, President of HCMC USSH; Ton Nu Thi Ninh – Former Vietnamese Ambassador to EU and Belgium, Former Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly’s Committee on Foreign Affairs; representatives of the Tri Viet Center for Educational & Social Studies and San Art (an organization of modern art), together with lecturers and students of HCMC USSH.

Prof. Ngo Bao Chau (R) and Diplomat Ton Nu Thi Ninh (M) at the talk.

Prof. Ngo Bao Chau talked about the reciprocal relationship between science and art as well as the common point between the job of an artist and a scientist. Accordingly, an artist’s sense of being strict and precise at work is the same as a scientist’s researching style, especially mathematicians who always seek for the concept of beauty. The professor used mathematical theory to decipher the attraction and harmony of several world-famous works of art. Some modern works of art seem complicated at first glance, but they reflect the way people find out symmetry – the core of the sense of beauty.

A number of interesting questions were raised to Prof. Ngo Bao Chau during the Q&A section. For example, what is the inspiration for his scientific studies? What is the difference between those majoring in natural sciences and those in social sciences when they do business in art? Is mathematics based on faith? What is an effective way of conveying the beauty of mathematics to children? In company with diplomat Ton Nu Thi Ninh, Prof. Ngo Bao Chau gave the participants erudite and witty answers, which received their warm responses.
