PROVIDING FREE WHEELCHAIR RAMP FOR DISABLED STUDENTS
, 01/04/2019 09:04On the morning of March 19th, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam attended a project meeting on supporting disabled students that took place at University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (HCMUSSH).
For the university, participants included Dr. Tran Dinh Lam – Director of Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, MA Nguyen Thu Huong – Head of Department of International Cooperation & International Project Development, Dr. Le Van Cong – Faculty of Social Affairs. Other participants were Dr. Uwano Toshiyuki – Tokyo University, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung (alumni of HCMUSSH’s Faculty of English Literature and Linguistics) – Disability Research and Capacity Development, and MA Nguyen Huu Linh – Institute of Social Affairs.
The meeting focused on discussing the project on supporting the disabled in society proposed by researchers from Thailand, Taiwan, Japan and Vietnam. The project is funded by Toyota Foundation and lasts for two years.
	
Introducing the ramp, Dr. Uwano spoke of its portability, manufacturer (Taiwan) with max capacity up to 200 kg but only weights about 1.5 kg and many more upgraded features compared to previous version of the product. Besides, he also intended to give away books detailing guideline on how to use the product.
Initially, the project is to give away 20 ramps for students at HCMUSSH during the first pilot year.

Being a disable himself, Dr. Uwano cares deeply for other disable in Vietnam. He addressed the difficulty of being disabled in many daily situations such as climbing on a slope or stair. The ramp will help overcome these obstacles. In addition, he plans to use social media like facebook to share his own feeling to other disabled in the hope that they will overcome their inferior complexity and socialize with other people.
	
MA Nguyen Thu Huong spoke on behalf of the university that the “school will contact students at HCMUSSH in particular and students of the VNU in general”. She hoped that more and more disabled students will participate in the program to spread positive values to others.
Dr. Tran Dinh Lam also expressed his hope for the success of the project.
