The bilateral exchange activities between the two countries were actively promoted through up to 3 high-level dialogues between Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc last year. At the APEC Summit Vietnam 2017 last month, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also had a bilateral summit meeting with Vietnam’s President Tran Dai Quang, contributing to strengthening the two countries’ relationship.
In addition, Japan’s local authorities are promoting exchange with Vietnam, especially with Ho Chi Minh City which serves as the biggest economic and commercial center in Vietnam. In the economic sector, there are now over 1,300 Japanese enterprises making their investment in the South. The Japanese Business Association of Ho Chi Minh City (JBAH) has reached 944 members and has the third biggest number of members after the ones in Shanghai and Bangkok. More and more Japanese businesses have made great contributions to the supporting industries and helped enhance the competitive capacity for the Vietnam’s economy.
Regarding tourism, the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan reached 230,000 people last year, and this figure is expected to increase up to 300,000 this year. The year of 2018 will mark the 45th anniversary of establishing the diplomatic relationship between Japan and Vietnam. For that reason, there will be more exchange programs, including the Japan – Vietnam Festival which is scheduled to take place over 2 days (27-28 January, 2018). It is also the opening event for a series of others to commemorate the anniversary.
