SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE ON VIETNAM – ARAB WORLD RELATIONS: OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES, AND DEVELOPMENT
, 31/10/2017 09:10On 27 October, 2017, a representative of the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies attended the scientific conference on Vietnam – Arab World relations: opportunities, challenges, and development organized by the Department of Arabic Studies, Faculty of Oriental Studies, HCM City University of Social Sciences and Humanities (HCMC USSH). The conference’s participants included many distinguished guests and representatives of HCMC USSH, Consulate General of the State of Kuwait in Ho Chi Minh City, and Embassy of Oman alongside other scholars such as Prof.Dr. Ngo Van Le – former President of HCMC USSH, Dr. Pham Tan Ha – HCMC USSH’s Vice President, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Yen – Deputy Head of Office of Scientific Research and Project Management, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Phan Thi Yen Tuyet, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Hoang Van Viet – Director of Thai Center, Dr. Ho Minh Quang – Dean of Faculty of Oriental Studies, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Tuan – Vice Dean of Faculty of Oriental Studies, Mr. Khaled Falah al-Mutairi – Consul General of the State of Kuwait, Mr. Mohammed Khalifa Al- Busaidi – Deputy Chief of Mission from the Embassy of Oman, Mr. Fahad Yahya Al Rahbi – representative of the Oman’s Ministry of Education, and Prof. Aly Said Salim Al Ryam from Sultan Al Qaboos University.
Opening the conference, Dr. Pham Tan Ha, on behalf of HCMC USSH, delivered a brief introduction to the Arab countries in cultural, religious, economic and geographical aspects as well as highlighting the international cooperation relationship between Vietnam and Kuwait since 1976. The Arab countries are Vietnam’s important partners in oil importation. There will also be scholarships awarded to students of petroleum engineering, agriculture and languages. Vietnam needs to formulate its policies to make them suitable to the current political circumstance. So, he thinks that research on opportunities, challenges and development in the Vietnam – Arab World relationship is of great importance. For that reason, the conference is a precious source for policy-makers and researchers to have discussions about related issues.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Khaled Falah al-Mutairi, Consul General of the State of Kuwait, also appreciated the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Kuwait, adding that he felt pleased with the development of mutual cooperation between the two countries. He expressed his hope that the Kuwait’s government will attempt to strengthen this relationship, including promoting the relationship with HCMC USSH, in order to obtain joint benefits.
Several papers presented at the conference included “The Arabic culture’s influences in Southeast Asia through the religious perspective” by Prof.Dr. Ngo Van Le, “Some characteristics of political parties in the Arab countries” by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Hoang Van Viet, “Prospects for cooperation in the field of energy between Vietnam and the Arab countries in the first decades of the 21st century” by Dr. Nguyen Minh Man, “Cross-cultural communication between Arab and Western countries through translations from Arabic into Western languages and via versa – the period of Islamic civilization and post-modernism” by Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa (M.A.), “Vietnam – the UAE relations since 1993: Achievements and prospects” by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Canh Hue, and “E-commerce in the Arab states of the Persian Gulf: Opportunities and challenges to Vietnamese goods” by Phan Thanh Huyen (M.A.).

The scientific conference on Vietnam – Arab World relations: opportunities, challenges, and development was successfully organized, which will open the door to the Arab World and gain access to reference materials for students. The Department of Arabic Studies is expected to train a new generation of workforce for the Arab countries and contribute to promoting the mutual cooperative relationship to a new height.
