From 15 to 21 September 2017, the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies (CVSEAS) welcomed a group of students from the University of Innsbruck (Austria) who were scheduled to participate in a summer short-term course. This is an annual program jointly organized by CVSEAS and the University of Innsbruck. This year is the 16th time that CVSEAS has co-organized with the University of Innsbruck to run this summer school with the purpose of creating opportunities for Austrian students to study and have field trips to some well-known places as well as manufacturing companies in Vietnam.

On the program’s first day, it honorably witnessed the presence of Prof. Vo Van Sen, President of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH), Vietnam National University – HCM City, who would have some opening remarks. Besides, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, CVSEAS’s Director, and Prof. Christian Traweger (group leader) alongside with 15 students from the University of Innsbruck also took part in the ceremony.

“In this program, students will have a chance to obtain understanding of Vietnamese history, geography, religion, economy, cuisine and culture through seminars with our University’s lecturers. Besides, you are going to visit Thuan Phuong Group, an embroidered garments company, to explore the investment environment and the textile industry in Vietnam. I wish that you will gain valuable experiences from these activities”, said Prof. Vo Van Sen in his remarks.

Prof. Traweger presented flowers to express his thanks to Prof. Vo Van Sen.

After the opening ceremony, the Austrian students started their course which lasted for nearly one weak with diverse topics about the Vietnamese country and its people. Presented by Prof. Vo Van Sen, the first talk was about the Vietnam War and other historic events in wartime as well as discussions about whether the war in Vietnam could have been prevented from the start.

On the second day, the students listened to Dr. Duong Ngoc Dzung, who used to work as an interpreter for former US President Obama on his visit to the Emperor Jade Pagoda, talking about Vietnam’s religions. They acquired information about different beliefs among common religions in Vietnam such as Buddhism, Christianity, etc.

The third lecture by Mr. Luong Thien Phuc (MA), a lecturer at the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature, HCMC USSH, was about Vietnamese cuisine, which created a pleasant atmosphere for the students. Apart from showing photos and video clips of Vietnamese foods, he summarized typical features of cuisine in 3 different regions (North, Central and South Vietnam) and ran a game in which the players had to guess “Yang” or “Yin” for various kinds of vegetables he had prepared beforehand.

On the fourth day, Mrs. Ngo Thi Phuong Thien, who is a former lecturer at the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature, HCMC USSH, and now works as Deputy Chairwoman of the Vietnam – UK Friendship Association, lectured on the Vietnamese social structure and explained how historical, geographical and cultural elements have influenced and established the country’s social characteristics at present. After the talk, she raised a question for discussion, i.e. what the students want to maintain or change for the Vietnamese society, and heard them eagerly share their opinions.

The others were two trips to the Independence Palace and Cu Chi tunnels, two well-known historical sites in Ho Chi Minh City. These events contributed to the summer school’s success.
