SEMINAR: INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: COUNTERFEIT FOOD INDUSTRY IN ASIA
, 09/10/2014 11:10The Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies (CVSEAS), in coordination with the Waseda University (Japan), held a seminar on “Intellectual Property Rights in Developing Countries” at the HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities on September 26, 2014 with the participation of professors from Japan, the US, etc. together with domestic scholars, experts, lawyers and businesses.
The seminar enjoyed the presentations of Prof. Koji Domon, Waseda University (Japan); Prof. Kawashima Nobuko, Doshisha University (Japan); Michael Yuan, Bottom Line Facts International LLC; Nagase Yoshinori, Japan International Cooperation Agency; Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, CVSEAS; Dr. Le Thi Nam Giang, HCMC University of Law; Nguyen Thi Huyen Trang, expert from the National Office of Intellectual Property – HCMC office; and Chu Manh Luan, expert from the National Institute for Food Control.
In the presentation on “Transnational counterfeit food production in Asia”, Prof. Koji Domon and Michael Yuan provided examples to clarifying common features of the process of manufacturing counterfeits around the world as well as pointing out how the strictness of regulations on customs and market in each country affects this process.
Prof. Kawashima Nobuko talked about “Japanese food and cuisine – Rising star in Cool Japan strategy?”, focusing on the dissemination of Japanese culture and its influences on the international integration of the country’s cuisine.
With the topic on “IP protection and counterfeit goods in food industry”, Nagase Yoshinori indicated how food is protected by IP law and how to identify counterfeit products.
Dr. Tran Dinh Lam presented “Chinese fake food in Vietnam”, providing information and figures on counterfeit food as well as highlighting the State’s role in dealing with related issues.
In her presentation on “Counterfeit products - From law to practice”, Le Thi Nam Giang gave information about violation penalties and how to solve such violations in practice.
At the end of the seminar, the speakers shared concern over the issue of counterfeit food production in Vietnam and collected ideas from participants, who had a chance to get more understanding of this new issue in Vietnam and Japan.
