This time’s event was the biggest workshop that had ever been held by the School of Southeast Asia with the participation of professors and researchers from 11 ASEAN countries as well as those from the UK, the USA, Japan, Sweden and China. H.E. KIM Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Center, highly valued the idea and long-term vision of the Busan University of Foreign Studies for orienting the future’s human resources to the Southeast Asian community, which is witnessing impressive economic growth and has become one of the busiest and fastest growing regions in the world.
Speaking at the workshop, Prof. Park Jang Sik (Dean of School of Southeast Asia) expressed his hope that professors and researchers will have cooperation in sharing knowledge and experience in human resources training. As for the Busan University of Foreign Studies, it is planning to run courses in Southeast Asian languages, which belong to a project with an annual budget of $2 million funded by the Korean Ministry of Education, with the hope of connecting regional countries and bringing job opportunities for Korean students after they complete their language programs. This is also the most important criterion for the Ministry of Education to provide research grants for higher education institutions in the country irrespective of private or state schools.
There are now 150 Vietnamese students at the Busan University of Foreign Studies, including 20 exchange students and 130 self-funded ones. Prof. Bae Yang Soo (Dean of the Faculty of Vietnamese Language) acknowledged the vision of the Vietnam National University – HCM City for approving the 2+2 program 15 years ago, which has made a breakthrough in human resources training of both Vietnam and South Korea as well as creating favorable conditions for the sustainable and long-lasting socio-economic exchanges and development between the two countries.
