THE 7TH VIETNAM ECONOMIST ANNUAL MEETING – VEAM 2014
, 28/07/2014 19:07Dr. Tran Dinh Lam attended the seventh Vietnam Economist Annual Meeting (VEAM 2014) taking place at the University of Economics HCMC (UEH) on June 24-25.
The conference participants consisted of over 120 Vietnamese economists, both domestically- and internationally-based, and foreign experts interested in Vietnam’s economics together with researchers from universities and other organizations such as the Development and Policies Research Center (DEPOCEN), the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the World Bank. Prof. Nguyen Dong Phong, UEH’s President, delivered the opening address at the conference.

Chairpersons of plenary sessions and keynote speakers included Assoc.Prof. Nguyen Trong Hoai (UEH), Prof. Le Van Cuong (CNRS – France), Prof. Tran Nam Binh (University of New South Wales – Australia), Prof. Pham Hoang Van (Baylor University – the U.S), Prof. Dinh Truong Hinh (World Bank), Prof. Tahashi Kamihigashi (Kobe University – Japan), and Prof. Yiannis Vailakis (University of Glasgow – the U.K), etc.
Prof. Le Van Cuong (Paris School of Economics, Director of the Vietnam Center of Research in Economics, Management and Environment) said that in comparison to previous conferences, the number of papers this time dramatically increased with hundreds of presentations on various topics such as economics, administration, commerce, finance, banking, and so on.
The conference is a prestigious academic forum for scholars of Vietnam’s economics, especially for young researchers and postgraduates. Reports, both released studies and basic research concepts, all received valuable remarks to become better. University lecturers could learn research ideas and methodologies as well as how to write a scientific paper or conduct scientific debates, etc.
This year’s conference is funded by the World Bank. After being informed of the quality of earlier conferences, the World Bank decided to provide support to expand the conference’s organization scale. Besides VEAM, the World Bank and DEPOCEN also assisted in organizing 2 other events: Vietnam Development Economic Conference (VDEC) on June 26, 2014 and VEAM's mini-course on Impact Evaluation in Development on June 27, 2014. The 8th VEAM is going to take place in mid-June, 2015 at the Thai Nguyen University.
At the end of this year’s conference, registration to host it in the upcoming years is granted to the Thai Nguyen University, the University of Da Nang and the HCMC University of Finance – Marketing respectively.
