WORKING WITH TAIPEI ECONOMIC & CULTURAL OFFICE AND COUNCIL OF TAIWANESE CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE IN VIETNAM
, 30/06/2014 13:06After having discussions with Assoc.Prof.Dr. Vo Van Sen, President of the HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities, about education development in Vietnam and Taiwan on June 15, 2014, Prof. Tran Van Doan, along with the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, had a meeting with Tran Bach Tu, Chairman of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in HCMC and Liu Mei Teh, Chairwoman of the Council of Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Vietnam.
The meeting witnessed the presence of Prof. Tran Van Doan; Tran Bach Tu, Chairman of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office and Kha Ngoc Kiem, Secretary of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in HCMC.
The fact that thousands of Vietnamese workers staged demonstrations to protest against China’s violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty over the sea and islands, and many of them took advantage of the situation to rouse the masses to wreck gates and fences, rob properties, burn up factories, assault security guards and experts, etc. of foreign enterprises on May 13 caused a lot of damage for Taiwan’s investment in Vietnam.
Tran Bach Tu, Chairman of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, said that thanks to prompt resolution from both sides, Taiwanese investors are still remaining a close relationship with Vietnam. According to Tu, the two nations should cooperate to maintain a stable environment for investment, creating conditions for businesses to develop both sides’ economies. The two countries’ governments have also made commitments and implemented specific actions for each to regain trust for investors.
Kha Ngoc Kiem, Secretary of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in HCMC, emphasized the necessity of human resource training, hoping to share Taiwan’s experience with Vietnam in the development process.
On Tu’s recommendation, Prof. Tran Van Doan and Dr. Tran Dinh Lam came to Vung Tau to meet with Liu Mei Teh,Chairwoman of the Council of Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Vietnam, in order to have more discussions about the operation of Taiwanese businesses in Vietnam, which will help form a foundation for opening short-term training courses in business culture for Taiwanese workers in Vietnam in the near future. The meeting also had the participation of Chao-Tung Wong, General Director of China Steel Sumikin Vietnam Joint Stock Company, and several managers of Taiwanese enterprises in Vung Tau. On this occasion, Liu Mei Teh shared about the meeting with Vietnam’s Prime Minister in Hanoi with the hope that there will be measures proposed to help Taiwanese businesses suffering damage by the riots and contribute to Vietnam’s economic development. It is very important to ensure employment for laborers in Vietnam. Liu Mei Teh also expressed her trust in cooperation and commitment of the Vietnam’s government on Taiwan’s investments in Vietnam, and she believed that Taiwanese enterprises will foster in ensuing years.
Prof. Tran Van Doan, in collaboration with the Providence University, is planning to held some training programs for Taiwanese businesses to get more understanding of Vietnamese culture, economics and society so that managers can run their businesses more effectively. The professor also talked about what should be done to promote unity among Vietnamese workers, making them aware that protecting their companies and businesses means protecting their own properties and employment.
