WORKSHOP ON ASEAN STUDIES IN BANGKOK, THAILAND

Dr. Tran Dinh Lam attended a workshop co-organized by the Center for ASEAN Studies, Thammasat University, Thailand and the ASEAN Study Center, University of Indonesia, at Miracle Grand Convention Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand on October 30.

 

The workshop was funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. Participants included 18 centers for Southeast Asian studies and representatives from regional countries such as Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, and Brunei, etc… Septania Kadir, who was on behalf of the ASEAN Foundation, and Mark Crossey, representative of the British Council, were also present at the workshop.

Delivering his speech at the workshop, Ambassador Bagas Hapsoro, Indonesia Ministry of Foreign Affairs, called for cooperation among ASEAN countries in research and training in order to co-develop in peace and prosperity.

Prof. Prapat Thepchatree, Director of the Center for ASEAN Studies at Thammasat University, Thailand, hopes to promote collaboration in training human resources for universities. In addition, it is also very necessary to develop a research network and co-publish valuable research papers.

Stepania Kadir, who is in charge of the ASEAN Foundation, laid out main criteria for funding to promote the development of ASEAN community, hoping that there will be numerous applications for research subjects of cultural exchanges, economics and society of the regional countries. The ASEAN Foundation will create conditions for researchers to have closer cooperation so they can dedicate themselves to university education.

In his speech, Termasak Chalermpalanupap, who works at the ASEAN Studies Center, Singapore, emphasized the experiences of Singapore in training human resources for economic development. The core of that developing process is the respect for law, appreciation of talent as well as creating a fair environment for all business activities.

Prof. Shaharuddin Badaruddin, Teknologi Mara University, had an idea of planning an exchange between his students and those from Vietnam National University – HCMC in the future.

Dr. Tran Dinh Lam took the opportunity of this workshop to deliver catalogues to the participants, sharing invaluable experiences of his participation in HEIP-LINK project, which is coordinated by the University of Alicante and funded by the European Commission through the Eramus Mundus program. The project aims at connecting universities to popularize experiences of numerous countries in Intellectual Property protection. Dr. Piti Srisangnam, Director of Academic Affairs, Asia Research Center, Chulalongkorn University, highly valued the project, hoping to have a chance to cooperate with the University of Alicante. He also informed that his university is granting scholarships for Southeast Asian universities’ professors to give lectures or have research collaborations in projects of concern to the regional countries.
