Dr. Tran Dinh Lam attended the workshop on “Policy of Foreign Direct Investment Thai Plus 1” hosted by the Institute of Developing Economies, Japan External Trade Organization (IDE-JETRO) on September 15 at the Bangkok Research Center (BRC), Thailand.

The workshop participants consisted of Dr. Masami Ishida, Director IDE-JETRO; Dr. Yasuhiro Yamada, Director of BRC - JETRO Bangkok; Mr. Yasushi UEKI, Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA); Dr. Ikuo Kuroiwa, BRC - JETRO Bangkok; Dr. So UMEZAKI, Director, Economic Integration Studies Group, IDE-JETRO; Dr. Saowaruj Rattanakhamfu, Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI ); Dr. U Aung Min, Research Director of the Myanmar Marketing Research & Development, Ltd. (MMRD), Myanmar; and Mr. Vanthana Nolitha, Director of Macroeconomic Research Division, MPI, Lao PDR.

The workshop focused on the potential for establishing a Mekong commercial area, the integrated strategy Thai Plus 1 and policies to boost economics related to this strategy.

Numerous questionnaires have been delivered to the partners, including multinational companies in Thailand as well as Thai enterprises operating at Vietnamese market and others such as Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar (CLM). One of the policies drawing experts’ concern is that Thailand’s government increased minimum wage up to 300 Baht per day. What should be done to adapt to this policy and promote cooperation between Japan and Thailand as well as with other neighboring economies were also brought to discussion.

Through surveys carried out by the above-mentioned partners, JETRO would collect data and information to help governments and enterprises in Thailand, Vietnam and CLM countries improve their investment environment, cooperation and economic development among them. The report is planned to finish on November 30th, 2014.

Taking this opportunity, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam presented the book “Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises – The Way to Success” to Dr. Yasuhiro Yamada, Director of BRC - JETRO Bangkok.
