2017 SEMINAR WITH STUDENTS FROM NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY, SINGAPORE
, 15/12/2017 14:12On 12 and 14 December, 2017, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam had a talk at the HCM City University of Social Sciences and Humanities (HCMC USSH) on “Overview of Vietnam’s economy” with the participation of 57 students from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
This is an annual event between HCMC USSH and the Nanyang Technological University, particularly Department of Economics, Business Administration, Accounting, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, etc., where discussions focus on various topics relating to Vietnam.
At the seminar, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam had discussions with the students about Vietnam’s socio-economic issues during the doi moi (reform) period and what Vietnamese people should learn from Singapore’s experience in order to develop their country in the era of industrialization and modernization.

Expressing their opinions on those issues, the Singaporean students suggest that in addition to economic growth, Vietnam needs to preserve the environment. If they fail to do so, economic development means nothing. Regarding the protection of natural resources, Vietnam should be cautious and introduce tight regulations.
To move forward in the period of industrialization and modernization, Vietnam must have good preparations in order to achieve sustainable growth and development. Also, it needs to put more emphasis on investing in education, especially in dual language education for it will open a path for international integration.

Increasing residents’ awareness is another knotty problem that needs solving completely. There still remain a lot of violations of traffic and food safety, which threaten Vietnamese people’s health and life. Traffic jams in Ho Chi Minh City, the country’s leading economic center, is also an issue of concern negatively affecting citizens’ work and life. The City has to quickly complete the construction of the HCMC Metro in order to reduce large-scale traffic congestion.
