LAUNCHING OF THE PATHWAY PROJECT FOR STUDENT IN PHILIPPINES

On February 23rd, 2021, the virtual launch of the PATHWAY project was organized by the International Project Management Office (OGPI) - University of Alicante, Spain. The PATHWAY is funded by the European Commission through the Erasmus+ program, which aims at supporting students seeking jobs in the Philippines and creating a network between universities and companies in the Philippines simultaneously. The representative of the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies - Dr. Tran Dinh Lam attended the program as a special guest.
The PATHWAY project (PATHWAY TO EMPLOYABILITY) aims at enhancing the entrepreneurship and employability culture of university students to meet labour market needs in the Philippines. This project is expected to create practical changes for the young workforce in the Philippines, solve the unemployment status, and narrow down the distance between education and job market needs in this country. The project is also predicted to create a network for universities, educational organizations, companies both nationally and internationally. Hence, they can foster the transformation of policies, training students, and support the grad students. The project lasts for 03 years, from January 15th, 2021 to January 14th, 2024 in the Philippines.
There are 5 main parties in the PATHWAY project, including:
- Universities in the Philippines: Ateneo de Manila University, Benguet State University, Lyceum of the Philippines University – Batangas, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, St. Paul University Philippines.
- Students: Enactus Philippines.
- Employers: European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP).
- Government: Commission on Higher Education in the Philippines.
- Universities in the European Union: University of Alicante (Spain), University of Montpellier (France).
Then, the delegations from the project made a speech in the launching program. From the government party, there was Mr. Christoph Wagner - Head of Cooperation Section in the EU Delegation to the Philippines, and Ms. Lily Freida M. Milla - Deputy Executive Director, International Affairs Staff, Commission on Higher Education. Both of them had the sharing parts about the importance of multinational cooperation in the area, which significantly boosts the economy and the society, also about young human resources and their adaptability to the labour market. From the employer party, Mr. Antonio Peralta - Chairperson of the ECCP Education Committee and of the ECCP Southern Mindanao Business Council, gave a general remark about the working skills and entrepreneurs spirit of the fresh grad students in the Philippines. Then, he suggested some solutions to improve the quality of human resources here. Dr. Roberto Escarré - Director of Service for Research Management, University of Alicante, and Mrs. Cristina Beans - PATHWAY project manager, University of Alicante, representatives of the Board of Management gave some details about the necessity, opportunities and positive effects the PATHWAY can bring to the workforce in the Philippines.
The Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies is the main member of a similar project in Vietnam with the coordination of the University of Alicante and funded by Erasmus+ named V2WORK (Strengthening the Vietnamese Higher Education System to improve graduates’ employability and entrepreneurship skills). The V2WORK project lasts for 04 years, and now is completing the last activities, including opening the Career Day, training about job application skills for undergraduate students in Vietnam.
