WORKSHOP ON DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE ON ECO-CULTURAL TOURISM IN LOTUS VILLAGE
, 20/01/2021 17:01On January 7th, 2020, at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the executive committee of TOURIST project had a workshop with Assoc.Prof.Dr. Thanh Phan - Lecturer of Faculty of Anthropology - University of Social Sciences and Humanities on the topic: “A different perspective on eco-cultural tourism of lotus village in Ninh Thuan province”. The workshop had the participation of Dr. Tran Dinh Lam - Director of CVSEAS and the students from the Faculty of Tourism. The workshop was within the framework of work package No.4 implementing the Center for Development of Sustainable Tourism.
In the opening of the workshop, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Thanh Phan gave his perspective on the eco-cultural tourism model of My Nghiep Lotus Village. He highly appreciated Dr. Quang Dai Tuyen for his entrepreneurial and venturesome spirit in operating and developing Caraih Lotus Village model. The development of lotus village not only changed the Cham community’s livelihood but also contributed to improve the income and enhance the social-economic life of the local residents.

Besides the positive aspects, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Thanh Phan stated the inadequacies in the development process of eco-cultural tourism of lotus village. The development of this community-based tourism model in My Nghiep Commune in particular and Ninh Thuan Province as a whole, he said, faced a number of practical constraints. Inconsistency of organization, management, and operation led to the situation that exploitation of tourism went separate ways. Assoc.Prof.Dr. Thanh Phan emphasized that experiencing local culture such as living in traditional houses, participating in production process, making special dishes with typical spices, engaging in festivals, traditional ceremonies, and buying local products must be the prerequisite for tourist attraction. Developing community-based tourism without a well thought-out plan of the government and the supporting cooperation of the local residents, obviously, distorted the inherent value of community-based tourism.

At the end of the workshop, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Thanh Phan and the students of the TOURIST project discussed the potentials and strengths of other local community-based tourism models. Since then, the students had the overview and multidimensional perspectives of the current community-based tourism model and proposed sustainable development solutions, contributing to tourism development in each particular region and throughout the country.
