LIVE SEMINAR ON VIETNAM AND ASEAN – ACHIEVEMENT, ISSUES AND PROSPECTS IN THE NEW ERA

, 15/12/2020 09:12

On the morning of November 30, 2020, at the invitation of the Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam, Director of the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asians Studies, participated in the live Seminar on “Vietnam and ASEAN -  Achievement, Issues and Prospects in the New Era”. The discussion also welcomed Assoc.Prof.Dr. Phan Thi Hong Xuan, Chairwoman of The Ho Chi Minh City’s Vietnam – ASEAN Friendship Association. The Seminar was organized at the Van Khoa Meeting-hall of the HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities with the participation of students from  many universities such as Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages – Information Technology, University of Law, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. The Seminar was also livestreamed on the website of the Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.

At the seminar, Dr. Lam provided an outline of the integration process and benefits for Vietnam after joining the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). During the period from 1975 to 1986, the closed door policy and the lack of connection with neighboring countries had led Vietnam to suffer from blockade, isolation and economic crisis. The approval for connection by Southeast Asian countries had became a remarkable success for Vietnam. As Vietnam was once poverty-stricken, outdated and severely damaged by the war, the country has gradually integrated, learned from experiences, attracted foreign investment and thus yielded proud achievements, such as becoming the world’s 2nd largest rice exporter. In terms of political security, cooperation and integration with regional countries has enabled Vietnam to not only promote economic growth and cultural values but also attain higher positions in international forums, reinforce and protect national benefits. Dr. Lam also claimed that the Vietnamese youth should focus on strengthening national competencies to increase our competitive advantages with other countries in Southeast Asia and the world.

Dr Lam presents achievement, issues and prospects of Vietnam and ASEAS in the New Era
Regarding action plans of Vietnam until 2025, Dr. Lam addressed the three main pillars for Vietnam in the cooperation with ASEAN: Political Security, Culture and Society. To accomplish these objectives, the most fundamental step for Vietnam is to build a strong and sustainable economy, especially private sector. In the coming years, Vietnam will be ready for welcoming FDI capital, but enterprises need to study technical experiences and management methods to develop domestic brands. Additionally, Governments should create favorable legal environments in order to encourage enterprises to uphold their strengths in mobilizing human resources and promoting the sustainable development for the economy of Southeast Asia. In terms of culture, the Vietnamese youth should learn and equip themselves with knowledge on cultures and languages of the regional countries, thus stimulating the exchange, cooperation as well as creating peace and prosperity for the whole Southeast Asia.
