VISITING AND WORKING WITH LEADERS OF THUA THIEN HUE PROVINCE ABOUT POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITY-BASED TOURISM

, 03/12/2020 14:12

On November 9th, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam- Director of CVSEAS had a meeting on “Potential Development of Community Based Tourism” in Thua Thien Hue with Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh - Vice Chairman of Thua Thien Hue Provincial People’s Committee, Dr. Tran Dinh Hang - Director of Hue Sub-Institute, Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies, Mr. Doan Sung - CEO of Doan Anh Duong Joint Stock Company and Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem Kieu - Director of Go Co Co-operative.

In the meeting, Mr. Sung introduced the Go Co Model in Quang Ngai province - a community-based tourism development model linking four factors (government, farmers, factories, and scientists), which gained certain achievements. Community-based tourism development in Go Co not only improved the quality of local life and economic development but also contributed to preserving the local cultures, building an ideal destination in the national OCOP program. Besides, Mr. Sung also shared the spirit of Go Co people, effectively following the motto: People know, discuss, do and monitor.

After listening to Mr. Sung’s presentation about the ongoing model of tourism in Go Co, Mr. Binh expressed his excitement about this new tourism type. He said tourism development in Thua Thien Hue has been taking advantage of the historical relics for a long time. However, exploiting tourism according to its inherent nature could not be able to diversify the types of tourism and to attract international tourists. In terms of natural conditions, Thua Thien Hue province has rivers, lagoons, seas, mounds, mountains, and diverse ecosystems, which significantly contributes to the development of local tourist industry.

Mr. Binh wished to learn the optimal method of community-based tourism development because he determined that the subject of this model was the locals. He expressed his persuasion for the Go Co model, which received enthusiastic support and cooperation from the local people.

Dr. Hang, after listening to the analysis and evaluation of the models, realized that the potential development of community-based tourism in Thua Thien Hue was considerable. The Hue Sub-Institute, Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies was looking forward to corporate with Doan Anh Duong Company to build the scientific center, which played a role as the operator in learning from the practical model in Go Co and applying selectively this model in Thua Thien Hue province. Mr. Sung pledged to visit and give feedback to the provincial authorities on this proposal in the shortest time.

The development of community-based tourism associated with local people plays an extremely important role in Thua Thien Hue in the context of the Covid-19 epidemic that halted almost international exchanges. For that reason, building community-based tourism had the meaning in contributing to improving the life quality of the locals, who mainly depended on tourism.
