TALK WITH DR. HA VAN SIEU ON TOURISM POST COVID-19 PANDEMIC

“Tourism after Covid-19 is geared toward community-based tourism”, said Dr Ha Van Sieu, Vice Chairman of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT). Discussing the TOURIST project* with Dr Tran Dinh Lam, he strongly emphasized the idea of developing community-based tourism. The meeting took place on October 10th, 2020 at the headquarters of VNAT in Ha Noi.

Previously in December 2019, Dr Sieu attended the seminar “Developing sustainable tourism: Experience for Southeast Asian Countries” of TOURIST at Vietnam National University, University of Social Sciences and Humanities. He was impressed by the presentations from representatives from Vietnam and European countries. The doctor showed his appreciation to the aim and model of the project - community-based tourism which is not only humane but also cultural-oriented.
In the talk with Dr Lam this time in Hanoi, Dr Sieu expressed his hope that travel companies and local governments will promote and develop this kind of tourism together. Besides, experts and tour operators should be sent to observe tourism-based models in Europe.
The pandemic has forced us to contemplate the vision of developing tourism. We cannot keep on doing mass tourism aiming at numbers of tours without concerning the environment and the local community. He added that knowledge and economic sharrings were essential for sustainable tourism. In addition, philosophy in tourism as well as the process of execution played a crucial role in developing sustainability in tourism to support the community. Also, travel-related businesses such as travel agents, organizations and operators needed to pay attention to the promotion and execution of community-based tourism. Simultaneously, travellers participating in this kind of tourism had to be those who are fond of environmentally friendly travel activities connecting with the local community. The pandemic has alarmed people about real values in life, making us find back and learn to live with virtues and sustainable values.
According to Dr Sieu, with Vietnam’s tradition and rich history, it was crucial to preserve and promote our cultural identities. Identifying values and finding talents were fundamental factors to get the support from people and the society. Therefore, travel businesses ought to be more persistent in building community-based models in Vietnam for the health and the general well-being of the community.
