2020 MULTILINGUALISM DAY AND THE MANY LANGUAGES OF E.U.

, 02/10/2020 22:10

On September 28th, The European Parliament in Brussel hosted an online conference titled “Multilingualism Day” with the participation of members of the Parliament; was broadcasted in all 24 official languages of  the European Union. Not only did the event celebrate the diversity of culture and language, which is a well-known advantage of the Union. It also presented an opportunity for seasoned translators and interpreters to meet and exchange knowledge.

“Multilingualism Day 2020” broadcasted live from the Hemicycle plenary and debating chamber

The four-and-a-half-hour conference discussed 8 topics ranging from facts about The Parliament all the way to the requirements one must meet to become a Parliament’s interpreter or translator and their daily work .

Throughout the conference, guest speakers’ ideas were shared primarily in English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish, and simultaneously retold in the 24 official languages of E.U. by 71 cabin interpreters. This allowed the audience from E.U. countries absorb what was being shared.

Due to COVID-19, 2020 marks the first instance that Multilingualism Day is hosted online. Instead of it being a disadvantage, as interpreters/translators couldn’t meet face-to-face, hosting the conference online gave people and organizations around the world easier access to the event.

Online participants were able to obtain information on The Parliament’s intern selection process as well as work opportunities and raise questions regarding the challenges which professionals meet when working in an international and nerve-racking environment such as the European Parliament.

The conference was streamed on Facebook by The Parliament's official page - Visit European Parliament, and can be accessed at any time, giving students and those who are striving to become an interpreter/translator useful information about the profession.
