DISCUSSION WITH MR. GAETAN W. DAMBERG-OTT

, 17/09/2020 12:09

On September 9th, 2020, Dr. Tran Dinh Lam had a meeting with Mr. Gaetan W. Damberg-Ott - U.S. Politic Official and Mr. Le Minh Tri - Political Economy Specialist, both from the U.S Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, to talk about the social and economic development of Vietnam and the nation’s position as the Chairperson of ASEAN in 2020.

Mr. Gaetan was impressed by the rapid transformation and development of Vietnam's economy as well as its regional integration in recent years. In addition, he complimented the Government’s proactive actions and the people’s solidarity in fighting COVID-19; the official hoped that those attributes could play their parts well in Vietnam’s furtherance, ultimately contributing to the prosperity of the ASEAN community.

The U.S.official also raised his concern on the dwindling state of Mekong River’s alluvial reserve; the main culprit being hydroelectric dams that are blocking water flow in the upstream. It is utmost necessary for affected countries to unite and come up with solutions to protect the shared ecosystems and preserve natural resources such as, alluvial and marine lives in the downstream region.

Discussing the Southeast Asia Sea’s situation, Dr. Lam stated that Vietnam has been and will always respect international laws, namely, the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Not only that, the nation hopes ASEAN members can work together to negotiate, legislate the terms of the Southeast Asia Sea Code of Conduct, and set the one goal of safeguarding the natural resources in the Southeast Asia Sea.

Dr. Lam expressed his goodwill by presenting Mr. Gaetan with two books titled “The Economic, Cultural and Social Life of Bahnar People Sustainable Development” and “Small and Medium-sized Enterprises: The Way To Success.” The doctor also expressed his wish for possible scientific cooperations with U.S. researchers in the near future.
